Lessons from the Robin

Over the weeks of shelter-in-place, I’ve watched a robin build a nest for her coming chicks in the peach tree just outside our back door. Then, she sat with the eggs. Once the eggs hatched, she tirelessly feeds little mouths who sit endlessly with their beaks open waiting for more. The robin never stops. She serves. She goes out to find a worm. Comes back to feed. Then, off for another bug. Yesterday, she hauled in an 8-inch garter snake that she killed. She could barely carry it. Leadership is about serving those you lead. These little chicks have no other place to turn. Their little lives depend upon her service. Her job looks thankless and tireless. Sometimes, leadership feels that way. But, she’s building a legacy through service.
